The Housing Development Alliance hosted volunteers from Forest Hills Presbyterian Church of High Point, North Carolina for the House Raising Challenge in July of 2008. The House Raising Challenge provides a group of volunteers the opportunity to dry-in a home in one week for a local family with a $10,000 sponsorship.
Upon their arrival in Hazard, twenty-two members of Forest Hills Presbyterian found a block foundation and stacks of lumber. By the end of the week, they had created a house, complete with interior and exterior walls, the roof, porch and back stoop, windows and doors, and even some siding. Hailing from the “Home Furnishings Capital of the World” of High Point, Forest Hills knew they had something special to contribute to a family in need. They could do more than just raise a new home- they could furnish it, too. After losing much of her furniture in a house fire, the homeowner got a fresh start with a brand new home and new furniture to boot! |
