Volunteers from across the country came together during the summer of 2008 to repair the home of Jackie and Alice Fletcher of Quicksand. The lack of indoor plumbing in their home, combined with a leaky roof and interior water damage, had become a burden on the family. Alice had to move furniture and belongings out of the way of damaging leaks from the roof, and Mackie, the Fletcher’s son, had to haul water to the house each day.
After 24 years without an indoor bathroom and 2 years of persistent leaks, the Fletchers are now on their way to a drier home with an indoor bathroom and water in the kitchen. They were delighted to find that along with a new roof and bathroom they would gain such great friends in the volunteers and carpentry crews who repaired their home. “I’ve never met such a nice bunch of people- I love them all,” Alice exclaimed. “They were the best little workers. They really can work!” After 564 hours, volunteers had re-roofed the entire house, built a side porch, painted the entire exterior, and installed new drywall throughout the inside of the house. Certified plumbing subcontractors completed their new bathroom. “Every morning I get out just to look at my house now,” Alice continued, “...I just didn’t think I could love a house like I do this one.” |
