Appalshop Cultural Center

Located in downtown Whitesburg, Appalshop is a media center dedicated to
preserving Appalachian culture. Celebrates Appalachian fine arts, film, and
music through exhibits and concerts. Hosts Seedtime on the Cumberland Festival

Branch Falls -
60 minutes from Hazard
Offers hiking to the falls over easy terrain through wooded, mountain scenery in
Letcher County. Located outside of Eolia, off
US-119, south of Whitesburg.
Bobby Davis Museum & Park -
in Hazard
Features photographs and history of early Hazard and Perry County. Also offers
lovely gardens and fountains.
Breaks Interstate Park -
90 minutes from Hazard
The largest canyon east of the
Mississippi, this park is on the Virginia-Kentucky border near Elkhorn City and
offers scenic hiking trails and overlooks.
Buckhorn Lake State Park -
30 minutes from Hazard
In the northwest
corner of Perry County, Buckhorn Lake offers picnicking, camping, hiking, and

Carr
Fork Lake & Dam – 20 minutes from Hazard
Just off of KY-15 in neighboring Knott County, Carr Fork offers picnicking,
hiking and swimming at Carr Fork public beach. Also, Carr Fork Lake boasts good

Cumberland Falls State Resort
Park - 90 minutes from Hazard
Known as the
“Niagara of the South”, this waterfall creates the magic of the moonbow, only
visible on a clear night during a full moon. A moonbow appears regularly
nowhere else in the Western Hemisphere! The park, located at the
Kentucky-Tennessee-Virginia border, also offers white water rafting for all

Jenny Wiley Outdoor Theater
& State Resort Park – 60 minutes from Hazard
Eastern Kentucky’s premiere entertainment center seats 1,050 for
professional drama from June to September. The park, just outside of
Prestonsburg, also features scenic hiking and water recreation on Dewey Lake.

Kentucky Appalachian Artisan
Center- 30 minutes from Hazard
Features the works of local artists. A non-profit organization dedicated to
arts and heritage based economic development and education. Open M-F 10 a.m. –
6 p.m., Sat. 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. Located on 16 W. Main Street, Hindman, Kentucky.

Kentucky Coal Mining Museum –
90 minutes from Hazard
This three-story
restored commissary in Benham displays artifacts, antiques, photographs, and
machinery to give visitors a look at the beginning of Appalachia’s major economy
builder, coal mining. Group rates are available and a free tour can be arranged

Kingdom Come State Park –
90 minutes from Hazard
At 2,700 feet,
Kingdom Come is the highest state park in Kentucky and offers scenic overlooks
and moderate-level hiking in Letcher County. Close to the Kentucky Coal Mine

Lilley Cornett Woods – 60
minutes from Hazard
Located in Letcher
County, Lilley Cornett Woods contains the largest preserved remnant of
old-growth forest in Eastern Kentucky. Guided tours available only with

Pine Mountain State Resort Park
- 90 minutes from Hazard
Just outside of
Pineville, this park offers picnicking, golf, hiking, and swimming, and was the

Red River Gorge & Natural Bridge
State Resort Park – 90 minutes from Hazard
Located outside of Slade, Natural Bridge gets its name from a natural
sandstone arch spanning 78 feet across a ravine, 65 feet in the air. The arch
can be reached by adventuresome hikers or by the park’s scenic sky lift.
