First Federal
Savings & Loan Association Helps
First Federal Savings & Loan Association was awarded $150,000 in funding from the Affordable Housing Program of the Federal Home Loan Bank of Cincinnati for its partnership with the Housing Development Alliance. This funding will be used to provide six local low-income families with safe, decent and affordable housing. “We’re so happy to have the Affordable Housing Program contribute so generously to Hazard and Perry County, and for all of the good work that has come from it since we began this partnership with the Housing Development Alliance in 2004,” stated Tony Whitaker, President of First Federal Savings & Loan Association.
This is the fourth such award for this partnership since the fall of 2004. The
Housing Development Alliance, a non-profit organization committed to serving the
affordable housing needs of local low-income families, will use the combined
total of $600,000 to help produce twenty-four affordable new homes primarily in
Hazard and Perry County. So far, the Housing Development Alliance has completed
ten affordable new homes with this funding, with another affordable new home
under construction. Employees of First Federal Savings & Loan Association will volunteer during the construction of a new home benefiting from this funding. The homes will receive affordable mortgages from both First Federal Savings & Loan Association and the Housing Development Alliance. First Federal Savings & Loan Association, with its headquarters in Hazard, has been committed to serving the mortgage needs of a six county area since 1960. Under the leadership of President Tony Whitaker, First Federal Savings & Loan Association is now a $120 million institution. In 2005, Mr. Whitaker oversaw the formation of Kentucky First Federal Bancorp (NASDAQ-KFFB), also based in Hazard, which owns both Frankfort First Federal and First Federal Savings & Loan Association of Hazard and has $280 million in assets. As a community-based non-profit organization, the Housing Development Alliance brings together all sectors of the community to eliminate substandard housing in Hazard and Perry County. Its partnership with First Federal Savings & Loan Association is crucial to this mission. To date, the Housing Development Alliance has helped over 85 low income families become homeowners, built 75 affordable new homes, and repaired over 150 homes. Both the Housing Development Alliance and First Federal Savings & Loan Association are equal opportunity lenders. |
