Your Gift Will…

...Help Those In Need of a Home

You may not know that the Housing Development Alliance has over 250 families on our waiting list—families who are working to own a home for the first time, families whose homes desperately need repair, and families who need a safe, decent, affordable place to rent.

Take, for instance, Linda and Harold Napier, who are raising their grandson, Tyler. Tyler has a mobility impairment, and while they lived in public housing for years, they had to carry him in his wheelchair up and down the stairs to their apartment. This month, they moved into the newly completed Guyla’s Grace, a barrier-free rental home named in honor of former Board member Guyla Burhans. “We love it here,” Linda exclaimed. “It’s so accessible for Tyler.” Her daughter added, “It’s in a great location, too.” Harold’s face just beams with joy.

Although the Napiers have only been living at Guyla’s Grace for days, they have been busy decorating for Christmas and celebrating Tyler’s seventh birthday. They have made Guyla’s Grace their home.

With your financial support, we can continue to serve the housing needs of families like the Napiers for years to come.

…Help Others for Years to Come

You can help not just one family, but family after family through the Housing Development Alliance’s Revolving Loan Fund. We ask assisted families to repay what they can afford in the form of a low-interest rate loan. These payments are then recycled to serve additional families in need. Your past support has made this fund possible. The Housing Development Alliance has served over 100 families with loans from the Revolving Loan Fund, with a total balance of over $1 million. To date, these families have repaid over $170,000, which has been recycled into more projects for families in need.

All in all, the Housing Development Alliance has:

 Built over 75homes

 Purchased and rehabilitated 13 homes

 Repaired over 150 homes

 Developed 26 rental units

…all for families in need in our community.

...Benefit the Whole Community

Though providing affordable housing is our primary goal, carrying out our mission benefits everyone in our community, including you.

The Housing Development Alliance provides 20 full-time jobs that pay above minimum wage and offer benefits including health insurance for employees and their families.

Our work creates an additional 15 jobs in Hazard and Perry County.*

Building homes has added over $4 million to our local tax base.

Carrying out our mission has brought over $10 million in federal, regional, and state funding into our community, which otherwise would have gone elsewhere.

The Housing Development Alliance is the largest provider of workforce housing (housing affordable to working families) in our community.

* Based on estimated economic impact formula of National Association of Homebuilders.

...Help Now More Than Ever

You may not realize that hurricanes have made it harder than ever to meet the housing needs here in Eastern Kentucky. As the Gulf Coast rebuilds, the cost of building materials is skyrocketing, while government funds are being diverted to provide much needed assistance in the region. For example, USDA-Rural Development, one of our major funders, reassigned 10% of Kentucky’s funding to provide hurricane relief. Another one of our major funding sources, HUD’s HOME program’s budget has been reduced by $150 million in part to pay for hurricane relief. Volunteers and foundations are also redirecting their resources to the Gulf Coast.

While we understand the need in that region, the need remains great in our community. You see the need, too. Please know that your gift will be used wisely, and that you will help make a difference in the lives of families in Hazard and Perry County.

Sincerely,
R. Scott McReynolds, Executive Director
